Monterey Bay Whale Watch, LLC controls and is responsible for this website. This policy explains what happens to information about you when you visit montereyseabirds.com.
What we collect ourselves
Very little. This site has no forms, no accounts and no login. We do not ask you for your name, address or any other personal detail anywhere on it.
Like every website, our hosting provider records standard server logs when a page is requested, including your IP address, the page you asked for, the time, and your browser type. These are used to keep the site running and secure.
Cookies and third-party services
Some parts of the site are provided by other companies, and those companies receive information about your visit, including your IP address. Some of them set cookies. Specifically:
| Service | Where | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Google Tag Manager and Google Analytics | Every page | Measures how the site is used, which pages are visited and for how long. Sets cookies. Data is processed by Google. |
| Google Fonts | Every page | Supplies the typefaces. Your browser requests the font files from Google, which discloses your IP address to them. |
| Birding Top 1000 | Every page (footer) | A visitor counter that has been on this site since 2002. Loading its image discloses your IP address to birdingtop500.com. |
| FareHarbor | Home page and Trips | Our booking system. Shows live availability and handles reservations. Sets cookies and receives any details you enter when booking. |
| YouTube | Four archived trip reports | Embedded video, loaded in YouTube's no-cookie mode so nothing is set unless you press play. |
You can block or delete cookies through your browser settings. The site works normally without them, though the booking calendar needs them to function.
If you book a trip
Bookings are not taken on this website. When you book, you are handed to FareHarbor, which runs reservations and payments for Monterey Bay Whale Watch. The details you enter there, including your name, contact details and payment information, are held by FareHarbor and by Monterey Bay Whale Watch, under their own terms. We never see or store your full card details.
If you contact us
If you email or telephone us, we use what you tell us only to answer you and to follow up where that is useful. We do not use it for marketing, and we do not share it with anyone else.
Keeping your information safe
We have technical and operational procedures intended to protect personal data from loss, misuse, alteration or accidental destruction. Access is limited to staff and third parties who need it, who may act only on our instructions and are under a duty of confidentiality. We have procedures for dealing with a suspected data breach and will notify you and any relevant regulator where we are legally required to.
How long we keep it
Anything you give us is kept only as long as needed for the purpose it was collected for, or as the law requires. After that it is deleted, or the link between it and you is removed, unless we must retain it for legal, regulatory or accounting reasons.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to ask for a copy of the personal data we hold about you, to have it corrected or erased, to object to or restrict how we use it, or to ask for it in a portable form. To make any of these requests, contact us using the details below. We will not charge you, and we will respond within the time the law allows.
